Margaret and Bob Munro visits the Citadel in Nova Scotia

Photos taken by Margaret during her trip to the Citadel in Nova Scotia.
Thank you Margret.
                                            The History
On our recent cruise to America & Canada one of the highlights was spending several hours at The Citadel in Halifax. In 1749 the first of 4 Forts was built on strategic high ground behind the original town site. The second was completed during the American Revolution, but replaced in the 1790s with the onset of the war of the French Revolution. With the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815, British authorities decided that the old wooden Forts should be replaced by more permanent stone. Building of the present Citadel, a smaller replica of Fort George at Ardersier, with many similar features, took from 1828 till 1856. The British garrison changed frequently, with regiments staying from 2 to 4 years at a time, until 1906. This National Historic Site is now mostly manned by volunteers (students) dressed in the uniform of The 78th Seaforth Highlanders of Scotland. Knowing we planned to visit here Bob was wore his Seaforth Glengarry. As a result he was introduced to the head warden / museum curator who made him an honorary member of the 78th Seaforth Hldrs of Canada and presented him with a polo shirt.

Highland Military Tattoo 2014

On Saturday the 6th Sept 2014 my wife and I went along to the Highland Military Tattoo at Fort George and of course I brought along my camera with me.
We first went to a reception held in our museum which I have to say the food was excellant and it was nice to see a few old faces that I knew which made it a great start to the evening.
While there I was asked if I would take a photo of Eric Munro from the Seaforth Highlanders Regimental Association (Nairn Branch) handing over a cheque for £700.00 to Major General Peter Grant Peterkin in aid of the Highlanders Museum (Queen's Own Highlanders Collection).
The Tattoo itself was a great success and they had very nearly a full house.
I have to take my hat off to all the performers as after doing many tattoo's myself feel that they did a really fantastic job. The fire works display at the end was as good as I have seen at any tattoo also.
Well done to Bruce Hitchings the director and his helpers who made this the success that it was, let's have many more.

The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders Kohima Weekend

Dear All,
I have just spent a wonderful weekend photographing events at the Kohima weekend held by the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders Regimental Association.
The weekend started on Friday with a dinner at the Crown Court Hotel, in Inverness followed on the Saturday evening at Eden Court Theatre with a viewing of the film KOHIMA: An Exploration of War, Memory and Gratitude. This was one of the highlights of the weekend for myself, I found it very moving. The film was put on for us by the Kohima Educational Trust and presented by our very own Maj Hugh Young.
On Sunday we were off to the laying up of the colours, dedication of Kohima Memorial Plaque and book at the Old High St Stephens Church Inverness.
The photos of the three events are in three separate folders for easy access.

Remembrance Sunday in Nice France

This year I was unable to attend the Remembrance Parade in Elgin due to the fact that I had to attend a wedding in Nice (someone has to do it) that weekend.
I managed to find out that they were holding a remembrance day parade at the war memorial in Nice just up from the harbour on the Sunday at Midday 11.00 hr UK time so Ruth and I went along to that, when they saw our poppy's they made us very welcome.
You will see by the photos a great turnout but what you don't see is as many people again standing at the other side of the road, many from the UK.
After the parade the re-enactment group in WW1 Uniforms invited Ruth and I along to join them at a display they were having in one of the square near the market so with camera in hand we went to join them.
Hope you enjoy the photos.

Photos sent in by Noel Nash

Dear Seoras,
I attach a number of Photos which may be of interest to the old and bold.
Three of them are from Borneo, the Patrol in the Boat and the two Jocks on the Track are labelled QOHldrs on the IWM website, the Border Scout Instructor is definitely QO Hldrs. I think that one of the Jocks on the Jungle Track may be Charlie Menzies! The other two photos are from Op Banner days. The CSE Show was in Hastings Street, Joe Mahady Hamish McPherson and Spud Murphy and others watching the dolly bird. the other one is from a recent Belfast Telegraph Cutting and is, I believe from our tour in the Short Strand 71/72, I know the Jock in the TOS, however putting a face to name, well old age.
Hope these are of interest.
Kind Regards

AFDP Inverness 2012

I am not going to say too much on the parade other than I think it should be held along with other AFD Parades being held throughout the Country and not to coincide with the Inverness games, by the way this was also the grumblings within the ranks, so organisers take note.
I also feel the games themselves had a very poor turnout of competitors this year
I will stop grumbling now and inform you that photos are attached.

Jimmy Mcrae

I attach this photo of my husband Jimmy Mcrae(15)' gravestone in Edinburgh which - due to a blunder by M.O.D. (and me) was only erected a couple of months ago 36 years after his death in a road traffic accident in Osnabruck. I am very pleased with the stone -the M.O.D. came good in the end - better late than never!. I have not seen it yet but my daughter has been down to visit it. I wonder if you can put it on caberfeidh.com in case there are any folks out there who remember him. If anyone has any photos with him in them I would be grateful to see them as I do not have a lot of photos of him (no digital cameras back In the day!).

Anthony Mone

By a chance meeting with Seoras I have discovered this great site.
I am the granddaughter of a Seaforth/Queen's Own Highlander, Anthony MONE.
I am keen to know if anyone remembers him and would love to hear stories/anecdotes about him.
I was brought up by my grandad and have very fond memories of him. He was an RSM but a big softie at home and his bark was far worse than his bite! Sadly he passed away in October 1983 aged 65 but he always spoke very fondly about his time in the Army.
I have included some photographs in the hope that someone recognises him.He left the Army around 1968/69 and to the best of my knowledge at that time he was working with the TA in Alness/Dingwall.

Moy Field Sports Fair 5/6th Aug 2011

With camera in hand off I set for Moy Hall to help man the Regimental Association tent along with David Grant, Maurice Gibson, Ian "Shimpf” MacKenzie, "Sheddy" Carr and Maj Gen Peter Grant Peterkin. I have to admit I did enjoy my two days spent doing my stint  in the tent and meeting up with people, I even met up with an old friend I hadn’t seen for 37 years P/M Nick Gordon.
The Association Pipe Band did us proud as they always do under P/M Andrew Venters.
I have also to congratulate "Shimpf” for laying on a picnic.

AFD Parade Inverness 2011

AFD Parade in Inverness 2011,
I found the parade this year to be a little disappointing as far as Blue hackles turning out for the occasion, I for one think that the AFD Parade is a very important event and we should all support it not only for ourselves to be recognised as a body of men but also for our serving Soldiers Sailors and Airmen that are giving so much for their country.
One point for the organisers to take on board. WE ARE NOT YOUNG ANYMORE so please no unnecessary standing about. The drum head service was a great idea but they will have to remember us old guys had just marched the length of Inverness only to stand about at the other end before we were even allowed in the grounds, then we had to stand throughout the service

Moment In A Timepiece

A poem sent in by Neil FordeI was but a moment in a timepiece made of gold, I watched in admiration as the meek became the bold.
The random parts fell into place and fast became a team, And like so many gone before we realised the dream! The wondrous Queens own Highlanders a fantasy for most, for those who took them lightly, they found out to their cost.
The Irish and the Arabs, Iraqis taliban, Every one found wanting when it came down man to man. This life of which we're part of, where we have proved our worth, Has got to be described as the greatest club on earth.
No matter where you pitch up, you're guaranteed to meet, An ex battalion soldier on any given street. The greatest gifts it gave to me, were comradeship and pride, And the skill of taking problems, in a proudly kilted stride!
In fact when all is said and done, there's no job we won't tackle.
For we are the men o' Cabar Feidh who wear the feared blue hackle! Neil Forde

Bn Gravel Bellys

Was having a scrounge around some of the old photo's the other day and came up with a few photo's that some of your readers may find interesting. During my career I spent 10yrs representing the Bn at Bisley, most of the teams I shot with had various sucesses, most notably for me was winning the GPMG pairs match 3 times with my ever reliable No 1 George Geddes. Other highlights were representing the Army at NISHAN in Turkey and making the ARMY Team that competed in Canada.
I teamed up with a lot of great characters from the Bn and we had some great fun over the years during training and competing at the various events, it's just a shame that the Army no longer competes centrally at Bisley because 35 GPMG pairs all trying to fire 59 round in 20 ish seconds at the same time was a rare sound.
Regards to all whom I teamed up with.

Loch End Photos

With camera in hand I set off from Elgin to Loch End to take photos of the guys arriving after hard gruelling trip down Loch Ness. Ruth’s trip to Italy

Recently my wife Ruth accompanied members of The Italian Star Association on their Annual trip to Italy. She was privileged to be asked to lay a wreath on behalf of The Scottish Horse at the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Anzio.
Ruth’s father served in The Scottish Horse and landed at Peter Beach Anzio, Italy, during the Second World War.
During the trip Ruth also took photos of Seaforth Highlanders and Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders graves in the war cemeteries. These photos represent the many that lie buried in Italy and other war cemeteries across the world.
The Veterans were warmly welcomed and thanked over and over again by the Italian people for their contribution during the war and for taking time to re visit Italy in happier circumstances. The Italian people stressed on many occasions that they teach their children about the sacrifices made by all troops.

Tosh,
While stranded in Tenerife recently due to the Icelandic Volcano erupting.I met this gentleman who goes by the name of Allan Dukesbury who was attached to the Q.O.Hldrs.We got into discussion and he informed me he was with the Regt in 1972 ish he was in the Army Physical Training Corp and took over from Colin Pontin in the Bn. He was well versed with Bn. Characters he remembers The Duffus Family, Davie Boswell. Charlie Millar, Dougie Sheppard and of-course Major Mike Crow who poached him from the Green Jkts  for his football skills.  In his day he was an extremely good foodballer and played for the Army.
Needless to say he mentioned Donnie Mathieson, Shug Topping, Dinger Bell,Johny Bateson etc. guys he played football with.
I wonder if the old school remember him?

MBBVA Dinner

Photos taken at the Malaya, Brunei, Borneo, Veterans Association which I attended on Friday the 9th of April along with me son Steven as the guests of Ian MacKenzie. Though it was a small turnout most of them being ex Queen’s Own Highlanders, it turned out to be a good night. Once again the Inverness British Legion did us proud with an excellent meal and bar facilities.

From Bob Maley

I have this old photo of the "B" Coy Football Team from the CO's Cup from 1971.
Its rather old looking from the wear tear of being half way round the world in my travels its been hanging in my Den, its one of the few that I still treasure very much and it does bring me many good memories from the good old days in Bonny "B", I know some of them have since left us, they will be forever remembered by me. I thought it would be a nice addition to your old Photo collection in your achives, there might still be several of them still around who were on the team and I hope they can reminisce the way I stil do. Take care and stay safe. Caber Feidh.
Yours Aye,
Rab.
Sorry Rab, but I could not resist doing some work on the photo.

A Golden Oldie sent in by Margaret Munro

The photo, taken in 1981, of the staff & children at the Stanley Fort Playgroup, Hong Kong which I ran. Have added the names of the staff so I suppose it's self explanatory. Just thought that it might interest those who haven't still got their copy, or some of the "children" who of course are now adults!

Thank you Margaret for sending us in the photo, this only goes to prove that the website is not all about the men.

A Poem by Margaret Mackintosh

My wife Margaret in a moment of inspiration penned the following few verses and wondered if being a daughter and wife of the regiment for twenty eight consecutive years she qualifies for your poetry section.
Her background to the regiment is as a daughter of a serving Seaforth/Queens Own Highlander from 1959-1968 (Cpl Jake Rose P & D,s and QM,s ) and then wife of serving member from 1968 until 1987(Ex WO11 Robbie Mackintosh 10 ).
She also felt as passionate as me at the decision not to include the Queens Own Highlanders when the name for the new regiment The Highlanders was decided something which I will never forgive those responsible for as long as I live.
Yours Aye
Robbie Mackintosh To read the poem click here.
