It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death Allistair (Gilly) MacGillivray who died on the 20th May 2013.
Gilly was agreat soldier and drummer, first with the Seaforth Highlanders then re-enlisting into the Queen's Own Highlanders.
Gilly was a loyal husband to his wife Meg and his children and grandchildren, he was also loyal to the Association Pipe Band for many years.
One of Gilly's pleasures in life was teaching young drummers, many drummers out there have to thank him for setting them off on their drumming career.
My own fondest memories of Gilly was when I used to meet him on the High Street of Elgin with the blue hackel proudly worn on his hat, you would get greeted with "Hello I'm the Gilly Gilly Man" and when you ended your conversation with him he would always end it with CABARFEIDH.
He will be sadly missed by anyone who had the pleasure of being friends with him or worked with him.
May he now RIP,

Tribute
The funeral was attended by family, friends and those Queen’s Own Highlanders who could make it.
Mike Prestsell was the Piper and led in Budgie and his Family to “The March of the Cameron Men”. .
Budgie was then carried in by his Brothers Lloyd, Roger and Angus (Angus’s son Justin), Andrew son of oldest Brother Martin and Danny Mullin. Sandy Dewar, George Bremner and Kenny Reid saluted Budgie. Mike then played “Green Hills of Tyrol the Battle’s O’er” -Scottish Soldier- (at Budgie’s request) whilst he was carried in for the Service.
After the service which was all organised by Budgie’s daughter Dana, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was played at the Family’s request as Budgie was a keen Celtic fan. .
At the end of the service as the mourners were offering their sincere condolences to the family, Mike played the Highland Lament “Flowers ‘O’ the Forest”. .
The family and all those attending the funeral were then invited to the Cladhan Hotel in Falkirk and had a buffet and drinks in remembrance of Budgie. We toasted his memory many times with Cabar Feidh Gu Brath. .
All in all it was a fitting tribute to a former Queen’s Own Highlander, who served the Regiment with pride for 15 years. .
Budgie’s daughter Dana would like to offer heartfelt thanks to all those who attended from the Regimental Family. .

Tom (Tam) Winters BEM

It is with the greatest regret that we have to announce the death of Tom (Tam) Winters.
Tam passed away suddenly on July 14th 2012: a great soldier and Scotsman. Although he had lived in Hereford for 30 years, he retained his Scottish roots to the end. His send-off on 26th July was a full on military ceremony: Highlanders to carry him and out on his final journey; pipers and standard bearer, and, at his request, a bugle playing the Last Post.
The amount of people who turned out for the funeral was overwhelming, and showed the love and respect that his friends and comrades felt.
He was a Seaforth, then a Queen's Own Highlander for the full 22 years; then affiliated to the SAS for 10 years.
Would you be kind enough to post his death on your website, with my email address, as I would love to hear from any old comrades who remembered him.

Jimmy Cumming

It is with deep regret that I must inform you that Jimmy Cumming passed away peacefully this morning (Sunday 28th August 2011).
Jimmy served in Germany, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, and the UK. He started his service as a young Jock in Osnabruck and over the years worked in the Signals Platoon, the Quartermaster's Department, and before his demob, as the Sergeant's Mess Manager in Munster.
Jimmy was from Glasgow, and as you would expect was a keen football fan and an ardent Rangers supporter, but above all he was a fiercely proud Queen's Own Highlander.
Jimmy (with the help of Annemarie) was always capable of recounting funny stories from the Battalion's past about characters and incidents that happened many years ago - a few some people would need alibis for!
Jimmy always made the effort to turn up to the Edinburgh Branch's functions and it was only recently that he had to curtail his activities when his failing health forced him to be less mobile - I know he was extremely sad at having to miss the Grand Reunion in Inverness this year.
Jimmy was a real character and we will all miss winding him up about the latest Rangers score the moment he stepped through the door of Leith Ex-Servicemen's Club!
Rest in Peace Jimmy

Stewart (Geordie) Anderson MBE

Stewart Anderson passed away peacefully at his home this morning (Sunday 7th May 2011) after a long illness.
Stewart was a proud Seaforth Highlander and an even prouder Queen’s Own Highlander. He rose quickly through the ranks to become a Senior NCO and a well respected Sergeant’s Mess member. Before being commissioned he was RSM at Crigiehall and after commissioning he took over as MTO. However, many members of the Battalion, and particularly the wives, will best remember him as one of our finest Families Officers. Frank settled in Edinburgh and once in Civvy Street decided to work for himself as a roofer, as well as turning his hand to many other building-related jobs.

Alec Mackie

It is with deep regret that we must inform you that Alec Mackie passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, the 3rd/4th August 2010
Alec Mackie (also affectionately known as “Zombie”) originally joined the Black Watch before transferring to the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, where he stayed until the amalgamation, after which time he served with the Queen’s Own Highlanders.
Much of Alec’s service in the Battalion was carried out in the Anti-Tank Platoon where he was highly respected by all those who served alongside him.
Alec saw service in Korea, Brunei, Borneo, Sharjah, Germany, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
Alec was one of the founder members of the Edinburgh Branch of the Regimental Association and was a committee member for many years. He was a staunch supporter of the Branch and attended all of its functions, usually immaculately dressed in a suit and his Cameron Highlanders tie, and more often than not with a pint in one hand and a dram in the other!
Being an ex-Anti-Tank Platoon member, Alec’s hearing was far from perfect and when any questions about the running of a function were addressed to him at a committee meeting he always had the good sense to reply “mines a Grouse”!
Alec was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and he will be sadly missed.

Cpl John White

Jock White, for that is how he was known, died on Saturday 24 July 2010.
Jock started work in the shale mines at Westwood in West Lothian in 1952 where he remained until one day in 1957, when he simply walked into the mine office to declare that he was off to join his brother Billy in The Seaforth, serving at that time in Munster. He served on with Billy in The Seaforth and QOHldrs until his time was up in 1963. It is worth while mentioning that Jock took up boxing in The Seaforth and was a member of the great Seaforth team which reached the final of the army championships in the early 60s, this in the days of National Service when Corps teams took their pick of amateur boxers about to be enlisted. Jock reached the rank of Cpl before he was demobbed in 1963. He later re-enlisted directly into the Special Air Service in 1965. This was unusual and arose after Billy was killed in action in Borneo with the SAS in 1964. Jock went down to Hereford for a memorial service and simply asked how he could go about joining. “Go and get yourself very fit first of all was the simple reply, and then get back in touch.” Jock told the story that the shale bing at Seafield is so flat on top only because he ran up over and down it a thousand times! And the rest is history. Jock passed SAS selection and off he went to serve in Borneo, Aden, Oman, Northern Ireland and other theatres too many to mention. Not that he ever did mention exactly where he had been. Jock was awarded a Queen’s commendation for Brave Conduct while serving in Oman. There is not much more to be said of Jock’s service he simply did not speak about it, but there can be no doubt he was more than good at what he did. To retire as he did in 1982, as a WO2 in the SAS is testament to his ability and the respect in which he was held. Jock had been suffering from cancer for over a year. He took great comfort during this time from the visits he recieved from his many army mates, in particular those SAS Troopers who made the trek to Livingston from Hereford. It was both humbling and astonishing to read, as I was privileged to do, some of the letters and E-mails which he received during the past year. They came from the Viscount Slim, Generals, and Troopers recalling past days spent on operations with the SAS in the harshest environments.
We join with them in praise of Jock.
Well done John.
D.W Shepherd.

A Tribute by Dougie Shepherd
There is not much I can say about Eddie Campbell (I hope I've got the right one!). I remember him as an MT Cpl but his main claim to fame was as a member of that great Seaforth boxing team of 1960/61 (I think), which reached the army finals and which also included John Cosgrove (Striker), Big Jock White, and if I remember right coached by SSI McGlynn. This was no small achievement in the days of National Service when many Corps teams were "packed" with semi-pros. It is only right that we should remember Eddie for the credit which he brought to the regiment.

A Tribute by Dougie Shepherd
Dick Foss requires no introduction. He was a giant of a man in every respect whom I first met when I joined 1 Seaforth in Gibraltar in 1956. He was an Army standard Hammer Thrower. He was an impressive man on parade and could he strike the rifle when coming to the slope!! He was an Army Championship standard Bayonet Fencer in his younger days. This was a sport which required great strength of arm. It was jaw dropping to see him extend his rifle horizontally during Pokey Drill, holding it in one hand at the tail end of the butt, and continuing to hold it there. He was an excellent shot who was only too ready to assist young aspiring shots like myself. His experience and coaching ability were invaluable to many. He could be fierce, really fierce, but more than that he was a great example both in the regiment at large and in the WO's and Sgts mess. I valued his friendship.

Dave Bathgate's Funeral update from Dougie Shephard

Davie was laid to rest at Methil on Wednesday 15 April. He was only 66 years old, had only been retired 11 months, and died after an illness of only 8 weeks.

We were well represented at the funeral by the following:
Stewart Anderson and wife, Dougie Shepherd, Tam Cairns and wife, '49, Big Uggie and Wee Uggie, Tam Nesbit, Gilly (ex-drummer), Sandy Dewar, Johnny Meechan (The Fly). Some of the older among you may remember Kitty, Davie's wife. She was ably supported by all members of her family including son Craig, who also served with the battalion in the early eighties - I think! - before going off to the SASC. He is now retired from the British army and is attached to the Abu Dhabi Defence Force.

Apologies if I've missed out any names.

Dougie Shephard
